Overview

Studio Chassis

The Studio Chassis houses the AGC and automatic loudness controller circuit cards from the OPTIMOD 8182A. By placing these cards in the Studio Chassis, you can install the main OPTIMOD unit at the transmitter site and use the Studio Chassis circuits to provide improved STL performance and easier access to key parameters that affect the sound of the station's program material.

Features

Specifications

Installation

Audio Input

Configuration: Left and right.
Impedance:10k load impedance, electronically balanced by true instrumentation amplifier. Requires balanced source <600 ohms. Common mode rejection>60dB @ 60Hz.
Sensitivity: -30dB to +10dB to produce 10dB "Master Band" gain reduction @ 1kHz.
Connector: Barrier strip (#5 screw), EMI suppressed.

Audio Output

Configuration: Left and right.
Impedance: 600 ohm resistive source impedance, balanced to ground.
Level (600 ohm load): Adjustable from -infinity dBm to >+3dBm, measured on a VU meter with typical program; corresponds to typical maximum peak level of + 18dBm. Designed to correctly interface with +4dBm and +8dBm systems.
Connection: Barrier strip (#5 screw), EMI suppressed.

Meter Output

Configuration: Negative DC voltage proportional to total master gain reduction.
Scale approximately -0.33V/dB, source impedance 8.8K ohm.
Connector: Barrier Strip (#5 screw).
Power: 115/230VAC (internally selectable), ±15%, 50-60Hz; 15VA. IEC mains connector with detachable 3-wire "U-Ground" power cord supplied. Leakage to chassis <0.5mA. AC is EMI suppressed. Ground: Circuit ground is independent of chassis ground; both appear on terminal strip on rear panel for strapping as required.
Dimensions: 19" (48.3cm) W, 3.5" (8.9cm) H, 11.5" (29.2cm) D. 2 rack units.
Environmental: Operating temperature range 0-55 degrees C. (32-122 degrees F.) Humidity 0-95% RH, non-condensing.

Notes

Total Level Control for the Studio

Transmission Control

When OPTIMOD-FM 8200 or OPTIMOD-AM is installed at the transmitter, install OPTIMOD STUDIO 8200ST before the STL to protect it from peak and high frequency overload. The 8200ST also controls average level on the link to maximize its dynamic range, translating to improved signal quality at the receiver. Barely adequate signal-to-noise ratio often makes the land line or microwave studio-to-transmitter link the weakest part of the broadcast chain. Transparent gain control translates to improved effective dynamic range for the link and improved signal quality at the receiver. Switch-selectable pre-emphasis limiting and peak control ensure matching to any standard transmission medium.

Audio and Video Production

In the studio, time is money. Quick setup and "no re-takes" certainty of control make OPTIMOD-STUDIO 8200ST the perfect multi-purpose level controller for studio production applications. On voice, its smoothness and Silence Gating guarantee uniform, hot levels without noise rush-up during pauses, while the built-in de-esser makes excessive sibilance disappear. Setting the RELEASE control toward FAST increases the punch and intelligibility of a signal without losing the feel of the apparent dynamic range. Moving the control toward SLOW allows the 8200ST to more subtly reduce the dynamic range of the entire mix.

EFP, ENG and OB Trucks

In the heat of field production, concentrating on riding audio levels is difficult. But if you don't, you risk overloading the audio sub-carrier on the microwave or satellite transmitter, or saturating the master tape. OPTIMOD-STUDIO 8200ST performs the level control-over a range of 25dB-and controls high frequency and peak levels to prevent overmodulation.

Behind the Front Panel

OPTIMOD-STUDIO 8200ST contains advanced Orban gain control circuitry featuring Class-A VCAs with inherently low noise and distortion, broadcast grade interfacing with EMI-suppressed, electronically-balanced and floating inputs and outputs and Orban's traditionally rugged construction. The 8200ST is designed to provide years of high performance operation.
